Pallet Heaven

Every once in a while, you find yourself flicking across the hundreds of channels on your ridiculously Smart TV. You stop on a home D.I.Y. program and your imagination is tweaked.

You think, I can do that!

And you know what, it's entirely possible that you can.

Pallet design has been all the craze for a little while now and shows no signs of stopping, but when was the last time or even the first time you saw a pallet creation in a home, any home? You don't and that's why this weekend is your time to shine.

Dust off the saw, take the hammer off the shelf, hunt out that jar of rusty nails and pop down your local Homebase or B&Q and ask if they have any spare pallets they no longer need. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Once you've strapped a bunch of them to the top of your estate car or managed to fit them half out the boot, it's time to take them home. Advise your other half that you will be spending the day creating a pallet marvel and if she likes, now might be the perfect time to see her mother.

Now that the back garden is all yours, it's time to get to work.

Below are just a few suggested ideas.

Found on etsy.com

Found on buzzfeed.com

Just imagine how surprised your other half will be when she gets home after a few hours of nattering with her mother to find that, yes, you have built her a new home or Castle, whichever suits her best.

For further inspiration, go to www.1001pallets.com and hav a look at their how-to guides.

Don't forget to sand. If you can't be bothered, call the professionals. We'll be happy to do it for you....the sanding that is, building a castle was all your idea, buddy.

Wood Sanding at the department of Chemistry

Being called in by Cambridge University is a real honour, it shows trust and belief in our abilities. As such, we took great care and pride in this job.

Master sander, Paul, led the way.

To say that this job was sizeable, might be an understatement. We'd been along a couple of months prior to sand the floor and they were just finishing with the building work. So it's fair to say there was a touch of feather dusting needed.

The parquet flooring ran the length of the rooms, spanned a full five aisles and sat on the second floor of the building.

As you might imagine, this was not a one day gig. In fact, we needed a full three days to get the floor to standard, but that is of little concern, as the end product is all that matters. For this job we enlisted the aide of Nathan, Greg and new boy, Ben.

Day One: Cleaning. We find it best to give a wooden floor a very good wash. Especially after the grit and grime that's often left-over after the builders have been in.

Day Two: The first coat of primer is laid.

Day Three: Lacquer.

After the job is at an end, that's when you see the reward after days of hard, sweaty, back-breaking graft.

Parquet flooring always reminds me of the old gym at my school, growing up. The shapes and texture distracted more times than I'd care to admit from the sport I was supposed to be playing, so, when we have a chance to sand, buff and lacquer a floor that will ultimately turn out like this, we jump at the opportunity.

Just think of all the scientific breakthroughs that will come in this beautifully floored room. Who knows, maybe one or two will come as a result of an unexpected spillage on said floor.

Once in a while you might feel the urge to sand a floor yourself and we encourage you to try, it's a great sense of accomplishment when completed. To embark on such a job, you'll need all the lotions and potions available. We recommend Pallmann. Just visit our online shop and you'll find everything you need to make your floor glisten like the Cambridge Department of Chemistry.

Alternatively, you can always call the professionals.

Sanding with the Boys!

A couple of days ago the sun was shining (I know, I thought Winter had come early too) and we sent the lads out en mass. It was a big job. Four handsome men and a rather petulant wooden floor. So, armed with all the tricks of the trade, a few hefty sanders and having vacuumed the floor and knocked-in those stray nails that pop out from time-to-time, they set to work.

The furniture was covered, the pets were up a tree somewhere and the kids were playing...elsewhere. As you can see, our promise of a 99% dust-free clean was staunchly in effect. That bag did look awfully full though.

When sanding, there's always the nooks and crannies that need to be tackled. The corners and the bits under the door frames and windows. That's when you send the new-kid (Ben) in. You can tell he's working hard, just look at those pit-stains.

The evidence that the floor was in need of a good buffing is plain to see. After years of varnishing, the pine wood had disguised itself as mahogany. Now, Mahogany is beautiful, but if you own a Pine Wood floor, you want it to look like a Pine Wood Floor. So in we came.

If you look closely, you can even see the Boss (Pierre) in the background, sneaking up on poor Greg. See the concentration on his face, he has no idea...LOOK OUT!

Now, not every wooden floor needs so much attention, but when we send Gail or Laurence out to quote for us, they take their time and access just how many members of staff we'll require to be able to give you the best possible service and at the end of the job, we guarantee that you'll be as chipper as the floor beneath your feet.

Always remember: Call the Professionals.

The sanded marvel beneath

Cambridge City is one of the most iconic in the country. Its streets, buildings and general culture is renowned around the world. Take a step inside anyone of its heritage laden homes and you will be bombarded with classicism and design style; even in the regular homes you or I might reside in.

However, while age brings respectability and class, it also allows for a stagnant approach to decoration.

Art of Clean specialises in restoring and bringing new life into the dated. With that in mind, Paul set to work on this.

As you can see, the veins and deep colour suggest an age beyond the buildings statue. There is so often new life, youth beneath the flooring and it takes a keen eye to find it. Stripping a wooden floor of decade’s worth of lacquer is never an easy feat. It takes hours of process and care, but Paul’s an expert and with his skills in hand, he set to work stripping and caring for these bored boards.

By the end of the day, his talents had worn away years of excess and revealed something beautiful below.

Colour redeemed, holes filled, boards joined and low and behold, there's life again.

Keep an eye out for our forth-coming blog on floor colouring.
